Mike Joyce, legendary drummer from The Smiths joins the line up on Saturday

Mike's first band was a punk outfit called The Hoax, who played a handful of gigs in and around Manchester and released a 7" single, 'Only The Blind Can See In The Dark', and a 12" single, 'So What'. Mike then went on to play with Irish band, Victim.
Mike joined The Smiths in 1982 and stayed with them until their demise in 1987, after which he toured with Sinead O'Connor and Andy Rourke on bass. In the late 80s, Mike played on two hit singles with Morrissey as a solo artist, 'The Last of the Famous International Playboys' and 'Interesting Drug'. He then toured the world and recorded a single with his punk heroes Buzzcocks. 1992 saw Mike playing with another of his heroes, the mighty Julian Cope. A British and American tour with Public Image Limited followed in 1993, allowing Mike to meet and play with John Lydon and team up with the Souxsie And The Banshees guitarist, John McGeoch. In 1995 Mike collaborated on a track with Soul diva P.P. Arnold.

In July 2007, Mike along with former band mate Andy Rourke released ‘Inside The Smiths’, a DVD which chronicled their experiences of being in the band. Both speak highly of both Morrissey and Marr in the film and convey how special they believed The Smiths were and still are to them.

Mike has been working in radio for the past 5 years, alongside his worldwide DJ career. His show, ‘Alternative Therapy’ began broadcasting in 2006, and since it moved to Manchester Radio Online has achieved an audience of 5 figures. The success of Mike’s show caught the attention of Jon Tattersall, from The Official Charts Company, who asked him to present The Coalition Independent Chart Show. The chart featured bands Mike likes and has invited on for interviews / sessions. Mike also guests on BBC 6 Music as their first stand in for Marc Riley, Radcliffe & Maconie and Guy Garvey. The strength of Mike Joyce’s legendary ex-Smiths status has attracted bands like The Drums, The XX, Noah and The Whale, Girls, Ian Brown and Delphic who have been in the studio for interviews and exclusive sessions. In 2018 Mike joined XS Manchester radio station, where he hosts a Sunday lunchtime show. In September 2018 it was announced that Mike had been nominated for a prestigious ARIA Radio Award for Best Specialist Music Show.
